The sunset the other night was pretty epic! It was spooky enough for me to be inspired to make this necklace, Spooky Sunset. This triple strand gemstone necklace has Black Agate tubes, Blue Lace Agate faceted rondelles, Carnelian Chips, Iolite faceted rondelles and Peach Moonstone flat faceted round beads. It's finished with Delica Glass spacer beads and a Silver Filled Brass slide and lock clasp. The short strand is 17 1/2 inches and the longest one is 21 inches.

I offset the Blue Lace Agate beads to mimic the light blue part of the sky in the photos. It's my version of a "painting" of the sunset using beads!

I did some research abouth the gemstones. Here's what I learned. According to firemountaingems.com, "Various types of agate, like blue lace agate gemstones, have been valued throughout history, all the way back to the Neolithic Era. It is believed these stones were originally used as amulets of healing, and this tradition continued through Ancient Greek and Egyptian civilizations. With its soft blue color, it's no surprise that blue lace agate meaning is said to involve soothing and peace. The circular, graceful banding is stimulating but still exudes a calm energy. Carnelian is the birthstone for the zodiac sign of Virgo (August 23 - September 22). For most cultures, from the 15th to the 20th century, carnelian was one of four birthstones for August. They also say, "Iolite is named after the Greek word "ios," meaning violet. The rich purple to blue hues of iolite earned this gemstone the nickname of water sapphire. Only officially named in 1912, iolite still was loved and valued by cultures throughout history.

Iolite is sometimes referred to as the Viking's compass. This gemstone is a light polarizer that helped Viking sailors navigate when the sun was hidden by clouds. An iolite lens enabled Vikings to determine the position of the sun even on overcast days, making it possible for them to navigate longer and further than before.
